May 29 - June 2, 2017

We had sad news at the beginning of the week that one of our classmates had suffered a great loss on the weekend. We made a card and talked about how best to support our classmate.

Our dictée words were common verbs this week. We added many verbs to our word wall and the kids acted them out as we did that. Then we told a story around the circle, passing a talking piece with each student adding a sentence. Each child had to pick a different verb from the word wall to use in their sentence, adding to our very action-packed story. We read an alphabet book that gives a verb for every letter of the alphabet.

Students began to prepare to contribute their best story to a class book of stories. Some began writing a new story for the collection, while others worked on editing an existing story to make it better.

We continued with measurement in math with hands-on activities measuring capacity (the precursor for understanding volume) and mass. For capacity, kids worked together comparing the capacity of different cups to the capacity of a shampoo bottle using water. They filled out a sheet with their conclusions.

To explore mass, the kids worked in partners to weigh different objects using snap cubes and a balance scale.

The kids also measured their pea plants with rulers for their plant journal entries.

In our living things unit, we shifted from our focus on plants to talking about animals. We talked about how different animals have specific characteristics that allow them to survive in their environment. Our field trip to High Park zoo was a great provocation for this idea. The peacocks and capybaras were especially intriguing for the kids. The streetcar ride was fun too!

The next day each table group did their best to write down characteristics of one of the animals we saw at the zoo.
